in an Urgency Culture
In today’s world, urgency is everywhere. We’re expected to be constantly available, perpetually informed, and endlessly productive. The pressure to do more, be more, and know more never seems to end. But this way of living isn’t sustainable—it leads to exhaustion, anxiety, and discontent.
For Christian women, this tension is even greater. We long to serve God, to be available to those in need, and to make the most of our time. But does relentless busyness truly serve His purpose? Or does it rob us of the peace He promises?
The Toll of Constant Overload
Research shows that chronic stress and overwhelm have serious consequences. Studies indicate that excessive busyness contributes to anxiety, depression, and even physical health issues like heart disease. A 2022 survey found that more than 60% of people feel they don’t have enough time to do what truly matters.
And it’s not just us—we impose this pace on our children too. From school to sports to endless extracurriculars, we rush them from one thing to the next, leaving little time for rest or reflection. But God designed us for rhythms of work and rest, not a frantic sprint from one obligation to another.
Biblical Wisdom for a Peaceful Life
The Bible speaks clearly about the dangers of an anxious, hurried life and the blessings of peace and contentment:
Psalm 46:10 – "Be still, and know that I am God."
Ecclesiastes 4:6 – "Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind."
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 – "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life... so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders."
Jesus Himself modelled a life of deep purpose without hurry. He withdrew from crowds to pray, walked at a human pace, and prioritised time with His Father. He never rushed, yet He fulfilled His mission perfectly.
Why Do We Do This to Ourselves?
Many of us feel torn between the desire to slow down and the fear of being unproductive or selfish. Christian women, in particular, wrestle with the tension of wanting to serve God yet also needing rest.
Fear of missing out (FOMO) – We feel we must keep up with the world’s pace.
Sense of duty – We worry that slowing down means neglecting our responsibilities.
Cultural pressure – Society equates busyness with success.
But peace isn’t selfish. When we’re exhausted and overwhelmed, we’re not our best selves. We can’t pour into others when we’re empty.
Aligning with God’s Design
There are ways to clarify our lives and align with God’s purpose. It’s about making space for what truly matters, not just filling time with endless obligations. Here’s how:
Reconnect with Yourself – Regularly check in with your soul. What brings you joy? What drains you? Ask God to reveal what He truly wants for you.
Live with Intention – Instead of saying yes to everything, pause. Ask: Does this align with my values and calling?
Set Digital Boundaries – Constant notifications keep us in a state of urgency. Limit screen time and reclaim quiet moments.
Slow Down into the Present – Take time to truly experience life. Savor meals, walk without rushing, and engage in conversations fully.
Trust God’s Timing – Slowing down requires faith. Believe that He is working even when you’re not hustling.
A Lighter, Freer Life
Choosing peace isn’t about disappearing from life—it’s about showing up with strength and purpose. It’s about learning to honour the space God has given you to live, breathe, and thrive. Jesus promised, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
Let’s take Him at His word. Let’s step out of urgency culture and into the abundant, peaceful life He invites us to live.
