COMMON CHRISTIAN CLICHÉS — A SERIES
Throughout Christian circles, certain phrases are often used to bring comfort and encouragement. But while they may sound spiritual, they can sometimes oversimplify deep struggles and leave people feeling unheard. In this series, we explore common Christian clichés, uncover their limitations, and offer a more compassionate, faith-filled approach to true healing.
God Won’t Give You More Than You Can Handle? Understanding Life’s Overwhelming Moments
It’s a phrase that’s often said with good intentions: “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” Maybe you’ve even said it yourself, trying to encourage someone (or yourself) in a difficult time.
But here’s the truth—life often does give us more than we can handle. Grief, betrayal, loss, illness, financial strain, or heartbreak can feel absolutely crushing. And when we hear this phrase in the middle of suffering, it can feel like we’re supposed to just tough it out, as if struggling means we’re failing in our faith.
So where does this idea come from? And what does Scripture actually say?
The Challenge: Misquoting Scripture
Many people believe this phrase comes from 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says:
“No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it” (MSG).
However, this verse is about temptation, not suffering. It assures us that God will always provide a way out when we are tempted to sin—but it doesn’t mean we won’t face situations that are beyond our strength to endure alone.
The reality? We often experience pain, loss, and burdens that feel too heavy to bear. But God never intended for us to carry them alone.
A New Approach: Relying on God, Not Ourselves
Rather than believing we must be strong enough for every challenge, Scripture reminds us that God’s strength carries us when we are weak. Here’s how we can respond when life feels overwhelming:
1. Admit That It’s Too Much
Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is acknowledge that we can’t handle something on our own. But honesty opens the door for God to step in. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9:
“We don’t want you in the dark, friends, about how hard it was when all this came down on us in Asia province. It was so bad we didn’t think we were going to make it. We felt like we’d been sent to death row, that it was all over for us. As it turned out, it was the best thing that could have happened. Instead of trusting in our own strength or wits to get out of it, we were forced to trust God totally” (MSG).
Even Paul, one of the strongest figures in the faith, admitted that he faced more than he could handle. The key? He learned to lean on God instead of himself.
2. Lean on God’s Strength
God doesn’t expect us to muster up endless resilience—He invites us to rest in His power. Jesus said:
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest” (Matthew 11:28, MSG).
When we feel overwhelmed, God doesn’t ask us to be strong enough—He invites us to come to Him and find true rest in His presence.
3. Accept Help from Others
God often provides strength through people. Whether through a trusted friend, a counsellor, or a church community, we are not meant to carry burdens alone. Galatians 6:2 reminds us:
“Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law” (MSG).
If you’re struggling, seeking support isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a step of faith.
